Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway
Ever since opening in 1869 this unique train and boat connection has provided the most spectacular gateway to the Lake District. Travelling in original 1950's carriages hauled by one of the railway’s own beautifully restored steam locos. You can travel the length of the 3.5 mile of track taking in the breath-taking scenery along the way and sights and sounds of steam travel as you journey on this former Furness Railway branch line to the foot of Windermere, where if you choose you can continue on to Bowness or Ambleside by boat aboard one of Windermere Lake Cruises elegant steamers.
There’s a well-stocked engine shed at Haverthwaite, where a fleet of locos are maintained by their own engineers and a team of dedicated volunteers. There are Hunslett, Bagnell and Barclay steam locos and a number of diesel locos and even a Jones shunting crane.
There’s an onsite gift shop, brim fill of memorabilia and gifts and a licence tea shop serving freshly baked cakes and scones. If the little ones have any energy left at the end of the day, they can also enjoy exploring the woodland play area.
The Railway hosts a number of special events throughout the year including visits from Thomas & Friends and Santa makes a special appearance in December…
